# Is boarding school for troubled kids? The true part and the false part

College-preparatory boarding schools admit students through ordinary selective admissions: visits, interviews, applications and often an entrance test such as the SSAT or ISEE. Therapeutic and residential-treatment programs for teenagers in crisis are a different kind of placement; in Arizona many are licensed by the Department of Health Services and can be checked on AZ Care Check. The stigma comes from books and films, from troubled-teen ranches and boot camps that did real harm, and, in Arizona especially, from the history of federal Indian boarding schools.

> No. College-prep boarding schools admit students the way selective private schools do. Programs for teenagers in crisis are a separate kind of care, and in Arizona many are licensed health facilities.

No. A college-preparatory boarding school is a private school where students also live, and it admits students the way any selective private school does: a visit, an interview, an application and often an entrance test. Programs built for teenagers in crisis do exist, and some of them call themselves schools. They are a different kind of placement, and telling the two apart is the first thing worth learning.

## Where the idea comes from

The picture comes from a few places, and some of them are real.

**Books and films.** Stories have long used boarding school as the place a child is sent. *The Catcher in the Rye* (1951) opens with Holden Caulfield expelled from Pencey Prep, and *Dead Poets Society* (1989) is set at a rigid academy run by distant adults. Strict rules, absent parents and a teenager on their own make good drama, and the image sticks.

**The troubled-teen industry.** For decades, "sending a kid away" could also mean a ranch, a wilderness program or a boot camp meant to fix a teenager's behavior, and some of those programs did real harm. Many called themselves schools. Paris Hilton's 2020 documentary *This Is Paris* brought that world to a wide audience: she described her time as a teenager at a Utah program, and in 2021 she testified to Utah lawmakers in support of a law regulating such programs.

**An older history.** In Arizona the phrase carries more weight still. From 1819 to 1969, the federal government ran or supported at least 408 Indian boarding schools in 37 states, many built to separate Native children from their families, languages and cultures. The Phoenix Indian School operated from 1891 to 1990; its grounds are now Steele Indian School Park. In October 2024, President Biden formally apologized for the system at the Gila River Indian Community, outside Phoenix. For many Native families, "boarding school" means that history first.

So if the words make you uneasy, that is a reasonable reaction to real things. A college-prep boarding school today is a different kind of place: students apply, families choose, and everyone goes home for breaks.

## The part that is true

Therapeutic and residential-treatment programs are real, and they serve a real need. They are for young people with serious mental-health, behavioral or substance-use problems. They are meant to be health-care placements with clinical staff, not schools with stricter rules.

Even the boarding schools' own association acknowledges them. The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) lists "therapeutic" as one type of school, for students who need more structure or emotional support.

In Arizona, many of these programs are licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services as behavioral health facilities. ADHS runs AZ Care Check, a public lookup of the compliance history of the facilities it licenses. If a program says it treats teenagers, look it up there. If you can't find it, ask the program who licenses it, and expect a clear answer.

For some teenagers, a licensed treatment program is the right call. That decision belongs with your child's doctor or therapist, not with a brochure or a sales call.

## The part that is false

A college-prep boarding school is not a treatment program, and it doesn't admit students like one. TABS describes the usual path: campus visits, interviews, applications and, at many schools, an entrance test such as the SSAT or ISEE. It notes that many schools set a February 1 deadline. The school is choosing students it thinks will do well in its classes and its dorms, the same way a selective day school chooses.

That shapes who is there. A college-prep boarding school expects students to want to be there, keep up with demanding work, and handle a fair amount of freedom within community rules. Many have counselors and health staff; TABS says schools offer "24/7 supervision, health services, and counseling." That is support, not treatment.

The law treats them differently too. Arizona does not license or supervise private schools at all, boarding or not ([A.R.S. 15-161](https://www.azleg.gov/ars/15/00161.htm)). A treatment program is regulated as health care. A college-prep school answers to its accreditors, its membership groups and the families who choose it.

## How to tell which one you're looking at

A few questions sort most places quickly:

- **How does a student get in?** An application, transcripts, an interview and perhaps a test point to a school. An intake assessment of a diagnosis or a crisis points to a treatment program.
- **Who chose it?** At a college-prep school, the student applies and usually has a real say. Placement by parents over a teenager's objection is a sign you are in the other world.
- **Who licenses it?** A school should name its accreditation. A treatment program should name a state health license you can check on AZ Care Check.
- **What are the rules on family contact, and who sets them?** Schools generally encourage calls and visits. Clinical programs may limit contact for treatment reasons, and should explain why.

## Who this doesn't settle it for

If your teenager is in crisis, with self-harm, heavy substance use or a pattern of running away, a college-prep boarding school is the wrong place to look. A fresh start will not fix those problems, and a school that admits a struggling student without the help they need does them no favors. Start with your child's doctor or a licensed therapist.

And boarding school isn't a fit for every teenager who is doing fine, either. It tends to work when the student wants to go. A teenager who is pushed into it, troubled or not, may find the freedom and distance harder than the family expected.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is boarding school a punishment?

Not at a college-preparatory boarding school. Students apply, are interviewed and are admitted, much as at a selective day school, and the school expects them to want to be there.

### What is the difference between a boarding school and a therapeutic boarding school?

A college-prep boarding school is an academic private school where students live on campus. A therapeutic program is a placement for young people with serious mental-health or behavioral needs, built around treatment; in Arizona many are licensed as behavioral health facilities.

### How do I check a therapeutic program in Arizona?

Search for it on AZ Care Check, the Arizona Department of Health Services lookup of licensed facilities and their compliance history. If you can't find it, ask the program who licenses it.

### Will a boarding school take a student who is struggling?

It depends on the school and the struggle. Many boarding schools have counselors and support ordinary ups and downs, but most are not set up to provide treatment. Be open with admissions about your child's needs and ask what support they can actually give.
